Why Unreal Engine's hardware needs differ from offline renderers
Unlike V-Ray or Corona, which render a final image over seconds or minutes, Unreal Engine has to render 30-60+ frames every single second, live, while someone is walking through the scene. That means consistent, sustained GPU performance matters more than peak single-frame quality.
GPU: the single most important component
- 12GB VRAM minimum for typical architectural scenes with reasonable texture quality
- 16GB+ recommended for large, detailed environments or if you're targeting high resolution (4K) presentation displays
- A strong, modern GPU (RTX 4070 Ti or better) also unlocks Unreal's more advanced lighting features (Lumen, Nanite) at usable frame rates
CPU matters more here than in most rendering workflows
Unreal Engine's real-time simulation, physics and level streaming lean on CPU performance in ways offline renderers don't. An 8-core CPU with strong single-core performance keeps frame rates stable, especially in larger, more detailed environments.
RAM and storage
32GB RAM is a comfortable baseline for working in the Unreal Editor with a CAD import pipeline running alongside it. Fast NVMe storage matters more than usual too -- Unreal's asset streaming (especially with Nanite geometry) benefits directly from fast read speeds.
