Viewport performance, not render speed, is the priority
While an animator is actually posing and keyframing a character, they're not rendering -- they're working in a real-time viewport, often with a complex rig, IK/FK controls and skin weights all being evaluated live. This is primarily a single-thread CPU task, which is why animation workstations don't always need the most cores.
What actually helps
- High single-core clock speed -- a CPU like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or Core i7-14700K stays responsive even on complex rigs, more than a higher core-count chip with lower clocks
- 32GB RAM -- character scenes with textures, reference footage and multiple open programs add up
- A mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti / 4070) -- enough for smooth viewport display; the heavy GPU lifting happens later at render time, on a different machine or the same one overnight
Studios: separate animation seats from render nodes if you can
If your studio's budget allows it, the most efficient setup is animator workstations optimised for viewport responsiveness (as above) and a separate, GPU-heavy render machine that runs overnight rendering jobs. This avoids paying render-GPU prices on every seat when only render time actually needs it.
For solo animators and small studios in Uganda
If one machine has to do everything -- animate during the day, render overnight -- prioritise the CPU and RAM spec above, then add the strongest GPU your budget allows for the overnight render jobs. It's a reasonable compromise until the studio can afford a dedicated render box.
