The performance gap is real
For the same budget, a desktop consistently outperforms a laptop by 30-40% because desktop components run cooler and aren't limited by battery life or a thin chassis. A UGX 4,000,000 desktop will out-render a UGX 4,000,000 laptop running the same Lumion scene, most of the time by a wide margin.
When a laptop is the right call
- You have regular studio crits, site visits or group work sessions where you need the machine with you
- You're commuting and don't have a fixed desk at home
- You want one machine for everything, not a desktop plus a cheap laptop for notes
When a desktop is the right call
- You have a fixed workspace (dorm room, home office) most of the time
- You want the most rendering performance for your budget
- You're planning to upgrade parts individually as you progress through the course, instead of replacing the whole machine
A middle path that works well in Kampala
Many students land on a modest laptop for notes, email and light AutoCAD, paired with a desktop at home or in a shared studio space for the heavy Revit/Lumion work. It costs a bit more up front but avoids the worst of both compromises -- carrying a heavy gaming laptop everywhere, or being stuck with underpowered hardware for renders due the night before a submission.
What to budget
Entry CAD-capable laptops start around UGX 3,200,000-4,500,000 in Uganda; a desktop with meaningfully better rendering performance for the same money starts closer to UGX 2,800,000-3,800,000. Neither number moves much year to year -- what moves is which GPU tier that money buys you.
