Why SketchUp lags even on "good enough" hardware

SketchUp's viewport is OpenGL-based, and it's more sensitive to driver quality and VRAM than raw GPU horsepower. A card with too little VRAM will stutter badly once you import furniture blocks, textures and site context -- even if the GPU itself is technically fast enough on paper.

What actually helps

If you're also rendering (Enscape, V-Ray, Twilight)

The moment you add a renderer, the calculus changes -- Enscape wants 8-12GB VRAM for comfortable use, and V-Ray for SketchUp benefits from a stronger CUDA-capable NVIDIA card if you're using GPU rendering mode. Budget for the renderer, not just the modeling.

The bottom line

If SketchUp alone feels slow on your current machine, the issue is very often VRAM or drivers rather than needing a total upgrade -- but if you're pairing it with a renderer, budget hardware the same way you would for that renderer, not for SketchUp on its own.
